This isn’t exactly true. Look at the example in the post:

Lets say that we want to implement GMail’s priority inbox. This piece of functionality has three stories (assume)

* Allow the user to turn the feature on/off in the settings
* Implement the algorithm to sort emails into priority buckets
* Allow the user to adjust the algorithm by manually overriding the categorisation of the algorithm

Each of the stories above IS a user story. They each do have some end user value, but they have value only together. Each story individually doesn’t have any value.

Yep – semantic argument. If it is true that “When user stories first came upon the scene, they were pretty large pieces of functionality that took a couple of weeks to implement. Over time user stories have become smaller and smaller. A user story today is about a couple of days to implement. The upside of that is that you can split stories really small and deploy small increments of software. The downside is user stories have become divorced from customer value.”

Then perhaps this is all a simple matter of doing things wrong. I have seen a few Agilists post “X part of Scrum is DEAD”. Hardly, folks are just doing it wrong. Not adhering to what the things are supposed to be used for.

If you divorce stories from customer value, then IT IS NOT A STORY any more.

Also, this post fails to see that “User” does not have to mean “End User” or “this must show up in the UI”.

Can’t other developers be stakeholder users? Can’t other teams be the party for which you are creating? If you want to get semantic. Let’s all stop calling them User Stories. Call them Units of deliverable value. Wait, that must mean Stories are dead and I’m off to write a blog post

Yes thats one option, but like mentioned above thats not the only one. Here is how I would look at it

1) Plan for changes: When you are working on a domain where you know beforehand that there are going to have changes in certain parts. eg: If you do website design for many clients, you already know before hand how many feedback loops are generally needed

2) Features trading: In typical software dev, you have some important features, some low priority features. So you can trade doing more feedback on important features and cut scope on less important features. You basically trade scope keeping time & budget fixed.

3) Agile contracts: For high uncertainty projects (eg: new innovations, untested products etc) it is perhaps better to use a more agile suited contract, like time & material instead of fixed price, since there is likely to be very high amount of churn

So is it fair to say that you would budget in for some failed iterations, in that the customer rejects the work for whatever reason: goals changed, had a better idea, software not good enough?

This would make agile overall more expensive to the customer but more likely to build something useful as you say in your article.

The other option of course is to compensate the scope. Every project has some smaller low priority features. We can choose to take more time to tackle the uncertainty in important features and we can drop some low priority features from the scope in exchange.
