 +====== Estimating Features ======
 +
 +This page contains three sections
 +
 +  * Story point estimation for Scrum
 +  * Task estimation for Scrum
 +  * Estimation in Kanban
 +
 +===== Story Point Estimation for Scrum =====
 +
 +Many Scrum teams use 2-level estimation, where features are estimated in story points and tasks are estimated in hours. This section describes how to do this type of estimation.
 +
 +The first step is to check that the Two Level Estimation plugin is enabled. (It is enabled by default for boards created after May 2012).
 +
 +To do this,
 +
 +  * Go to the Board Settings page
 +  * Click the Plugins link in the submenu
 +  * Check that the Two Level Estimation plugin is enabled
 +  * If it is not enabled, then enable it here
 +

 +
 +Once the plugin is enabled, then when you create a new feature you will now be prompted for the Story Point value.
 +
 +{{:silver_catalyst:storypoints_2.png?nolink|}}
 +
 +The Story Point value will be displayed on the card with a little star next to it, like this:
 +
 +{{:silver_catalyst:storypoints_3.png?nolink|}}
 +
 +In addition, the following calculations will use the Story Point values
 +
 +  * Average Velocity
 +  * Scheduled Velocity
 +  * Project Burndown
 +  * Velocity Trend
 +
 +When you do a task breakdown of the feature card, you can estimate the task cards using hours. The feature card will then display both values on the board: The feature story point estimation (with a star beside it), and the sum of the task estimates (without a star)

 +
 +===== Task Rollup Estimation for Scrum =====
 +
 +Some Scrum teams use task rollup estimation, where only tasks are estimated and the feature estimate is the sum of all the task estimates. This section describes how to do this type of estimation.
 +
 +To do task rollup estimation, you need to check that the Two Level Estimation plugin is //disabled//. (It is enabled by default for boards created after May 2012).
 +
 +To do this,
 +
 +  * Go to the Board Settings page
 +  * Click the Plugins link in the submenu
 +  * Check that the Two Level Estimation plugin is //disabled//
 +  * If it is not disabled, then disable it here
 +
 +{{:silver_catalyst:storypoints_1.png?nolink|}}
 +
 +Once disabled, the following calculations will roll up the estimates from the tasks
 +
 +  * Average Velocity
 +  * Scheduled Velocity
 +  * Project Burndown
 +  * Velocity Trend
 +
 +===== Estimation in Kanban =====
 +
 +Estimation in Kanban is optional. While many Kanban teams do not estimate their cards, some teams do. Estimation in Kanban relatively straightforward, because the estimate is only used for displaying on the card. Simply set an estimate when you create a card and you're done.
